भौतिक विज्ञान की दृष्टि से जब सूर्य व पृथ्वी के बीच में चन्द्रमा आ जाता है तो चन्द्रमा के पीछे सूर्य ढक जाता है, इसी घटना को सूर्य ग्रहण कहा जाता है। पृथ्वी सूरज की परिक्रमा करती है और चाँद पृथ्वी की। कभी-कभी चाँद, सूरज और धरती के बीच आ जाता है। फिर वह सूरज की कुछ या सारी रोशनी रोक लेता है जिससे धरती पर साया फैल जाता है। इस घटना को सूर्य ग्रहण कहा जाता है। यह घटना सदा सर्वदा अमावस्या को ही होती है।

अक्सर चाँद, सूरज के सिर्फ़ कुछ हिस्से को ही ढ़कता है। यह स्थिति खण्ड-ग्रहण कहलाती है। कभी-कभी ही ऐसा होता है कि चाँद सूरज को पूरी तरह ढँक लेता है, इसे पूर्ण-ग्रहण कहते हैं। पूर्ण-ग्रहण धरती के बहुत कम क्षेत्र में ही देखा जा सकता है। ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा दो सौ पचास (250) किलोमीटर के सम्पर्क में। इस क्षेत्र के बाहर केवल खंड-ग्रहण दिखाई देता है। पूर्ण-ग्रहण के समय चाँद को सूरज के सामने से गुजरने में दो घण्टे लगते हैं। चाँद सूरज को पूरी तरह से, ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा, सात मिनट तक ढँकता है। इन कुछ क्षणों के लिए आसमान में अंधेरा हो जाता है, या यूँ कहें कि दिन में रात हो जाती है।
